TEXARKANA ISD ONE OF 22 TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS RECOGNIZED FOR EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY AND IMPROVING PERFORMANCE IN ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAMMING

Texarkana, TX – Texarkana Independent School District has been recognized by the College Board as one of 22 Texas school districts whose efforts have increased access to Advanced Placement (AP) coursework while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP exams.

Commissioner of Education Mike Morath announced in February that according to the College Board’s AP Cohort Data Report for the Class of 2016, more than 122,000 Texas graduates took at least one AP exam during their high school careers.  In addition, the percentage of Texas students taking at least one AP exam in high school continues to stay ahead of the national average.

For the 2015-16 school year, student course enrollment in AP programs at Texas High School was at 967, which is an increase of 340 course enrollments since 2010.  Sixty-one percent of students were scoring at 3 or higher while students scoring 5 increased by 47% over the previous year.  Sixty-four students were named Advanced Placement scholars (31% increase over 2015) and two students earned AP National Scholar recognition.

For the upcoming 2017-18 school year, TISD’s AP program will offer 28 courses for a minimum of 84 college semester hours of credit.  Additionally, there will be 34 Pre-AP preparation courses offered for Texas Middle and Texas High School students.

Research shows that students who succeed in rigorous course work, such as that offered by AP, are developing college-level knowledge and skills while still in high school.  These students are more likely than their peers to earn college degrees on time, which gives them an opportunity to save significant amounts of money.
