The 2017 AKC All-Breed Dog Show scheduled for June 17 & June 18 at the Texarkana Four States Fairgrounds has been cancelled due to a very serious dog virus going around throughout the United States.
This Canine Influenza seems to have been spreading at other dog shows in the country so for the health and welfare of our furry friends the decision was made to cancel the dog show in Texarkana this year.
Our understanding is that the virus is airborne, meaning that if a dog comes into contact (within 20 feet) of another dog that has the virus, it’s likely to become infected. Dogs infected with the virus may not show symptoms for several days and there currently is not a vaccine for this strain of the virus. Dog owners are being advised to keep their dogs away from areas where a high traffic of dogs may have been (dog parks, kennels, groomers, dog shows, pet stores, etc.) until the virus is under control. If a dog has been exposed to other dogs that have a cough, it is recommended to quarantine your dog for 21 days to be sure it hasn’t contracted the Influenza.
We are all hoping this virus will soon be under control and the Texarkana dog show will be a go for next year in June, 2018.
