Leadership Texarkana’s Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Leaders will be held June 19-22, 2017
A group of high school students from throughout the community will be participating this week in Leadership Texarkana’s summer leadership program, Today’s Youth–Tomorrow’s Leaders (TYTL). The purpose of Today’s Youth Tomorrow’s Leaders is to start young to engage and equip high-school-aged leaders from throughout the community in working together for community excellence, pride and progress.
TYTL Partners with Leadership Texarkana include Liberty-Eylau ISD, Pleasant Grove ISD, Texarkana ISD, Texarkana Arkansas School District, each of which provides a portion of the funding for this leadership opportunity for area youth; Leadership Texarkana funds cover the remaining fifty percent of program expense. Oaklawn Rotary has also contributed support for this year’s program.
The program will be held June 19-22 with day-long sessions which rotate daily among each of the four partnering districts. The majority of the thirty-eight participating students will be entering either their junior or senior high-school years at one of the four city districts, with additional students representing Genoa Central, Redwater, DeKalb, New Boston and Hooks districts.
The curriculum centers around fostering personal growth for effective leadership, as well as opportunities to learn the importance of Working Together to leadership success and to making a positive difference in our community. The students will be meeting with and learning from the mayors of the two Texarkanas, as well as superintendents from the participating high schools, non-profit leaders, and public staff and volunteer community leaders whose business is community pride and beautification. Most importantly, the students will be working in inter-district groups to ponder the possibilities for the greater Texarkana area.
The final session day on Thursday includes a culminating celebratory reception for graduates at 5:30PM at TISD’s Sullivan Center on Summerhill Rd. Students who successfully complete the program earn cords to wear at their high school commencement exercises.
Program facilitators for 2017 are TASD’s Theresa Cowling (LT Class of 2015) and TISD’s Wes Kirkham (LT Class of 2014); TYTL Board Chair is LEISD’s Amy Roberts (LT Class of 2016).
Begun by Leadership Texarkana in 1995, this will be the twenty-second class of TYTL.
